Gum disease affects most people at some stage during their life. It is an inflamatory response of the gum tissues, most commonly to bacterial plaque build-up. There are two main stages of gum disease: Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
Like many conditions, early intervention to treat gum disease can ensure the longevity of your teeth. If you have swollen, or bleeding gums, or your teeth feel loose, see your dental hygienist.
Dental hygienists are licensed dental professionals who have specialised education and training in preventing and treating oral diseases. Many dentists delegate this duty to a dental hygienist because of their expertise in this area.
Dr Nalbandian will schedule you to see me for your teeth cleaning and counselling on how you can best achieve and maintain good oral health for a lifetime.
During your visit, I will undertake an oral assessment and review your dental history and overall health, in order to evaluate the condition of your gums, teeth and mouth to help prevent oral diseases. I will also perform a clean, scale and polish to remove plaque, tartar and some stains from your teeth, and administer a fluoride.
Helping to avoid tooth loss and gum disease are vitally important to protecting your general, as well as your dental health, because gum disease has been linked to many conditions whilst tooth loss can affect your diet.
My role as hygienist/oral therapist is to coordinate the initial assessment of your oral health (teeth and gums) and most importantly the maintenance protocol that the specialist Dr Nalbandian will individually tailor for your requirements.
This is teamwork at its best. Not only when you come in to our practice as a regular patient, but also the first time you come in to see us.
