Dark Line Around The Crown
This is a difficult procedure and a correct diagnosis and treatment plan is required. In many ways simple treatment works best as in the case of the patient below where the dark discolouration was masked and composite veneers placed. All was completed in one visit improving overall appearance of the teeth and smile. This visit required no injections and no pain. In many cases new crowns will be required.
The root can discolour from loss of tooth vitality, past root-canal therapy, gum recession and presence of metal ceramic crowns. This is most obvious in patients with high smile line.
The dark discolouration can be treated with:
- Gum repositioning and Ct (connective tissue) grafting
- Manufacture a new crown
- Special masking of affect of metal and root discoloration near the tooth crown margin

Note the dark gum discolouration due to metal crown margins and discoloured root from past root canal therapy

Treatment included;
- Gum leveling across the midline
- Construction of new all porcelain crowns and veneers on upper nine teeth to improve overall colour and tooth emergence profile
- Establishing pleasant aesthetics

BEFORE
Patient presented with dark line around the veneer crown due to compromised marginal integrity with the tooth. The presence of marginal inflammation and discolouration is evident. The crown also does not match in colour with the natural tooth.

TREATMENT COMMENCED
Removal of the veneer/crown shows the presence of marginal inflammation, discoloured root and core.

AFTER
New all porcelain crown constructed and cemented showing optimal gum health and aesthetic tooth emergence profile.

AFTER
Patient can now smile with confidence.
