If you fear a trip to the dentist, you are not alone. But why is this so? There seem to be a number of reasons. Some patients have a fear of the unknown; some may have had a past traumatic experience, especially in their childhood; while others’ fear may be based on horror stories they have heard.

One way to alleviate fear is to research the dentist and the procedure before you decide to proceed. My practice has performed thousands of different types of cosmetic procedures all of which are collated on an internal database. We also have numerous DVDs of patient testimonials.

Fear can also derive from age. Older generations may have experienced distressing dentistry due to lack of fluoridation, as well as from a lack of orthodontic treatment. Patients aged in their fifties are often excellent candidates for aesthetic improvement. This is because they usually have had multiple amalgam restorations which have served them well until now, and they may have a few missing teeth or unsightly crowns displaying dark marginal discolouration. Cosmetic dentistry can dramatically improve a person’s aesthetic appearance. In terms of pain, dentistry has come a long way. Cosmetic procedures such as veneers, crowns and implants can be accomplished by using the same local anaesthetic used for normal fillings. Ultimately though, the patient chooses the preferred method of pain control.  IV sedation and nitrous oxide are also offered.

The Wand

Our surgery uses The Wand ® technology to give patients injections. The Wand® is the first computer controlled system for delivery of local anaesthetic. It replaces the 150-year-old technology of syringes, providing precision needle control and precision anaesthetic delivery.

When medicines are injected into the body, they cause momentary expansion of the skin and tissues. The precision delivery decreases this expansion and decreases the discomfort you feel during injections. In most cases, the anaesthetic can be applied with no pain at all!

This procedure is provided by a medical doctor, specialising in sedation anaesthesiology. Please click file to download further instructions.
