Case Study: Enamel Microabrasion
Opalustre® from Ultradent®
The brown discolourations are eliminated
Patient (who is referring dentist’s son) presented for post orthodontic treatment, referred for options in improving the generalised discolouration. As the patient is only 14-15years old, my practice philosophy dictates minimal intervention. Naturally we could consider composite or porcelain veneers, however, placing eight veneers would have been an easier treatment plan, but it would not have served this young person well in the long term.
Enamel microabrasion was used to remove the “white spot” discolorations on the teeth or in this case, to remove the middle dark areas of discolouration. Irrespective of the nature of the problem, both the parent and the patient preferred uniform tooth colour.
I have had good experience with two excellent products available for this procedure. Either PREMA from Premier or Opalustre® from Ultradent can be used. Both of them contain dilute hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid). This simple procedure is quite predictable (case assessment is required) to remove the superficial white spots.
We normally wait and assess, as some of the white spots that still remain upon completion of the microabrasion appointment, will be gone two weeks later.
General improvement to the uniformity of colour and overall aesthetics. I feel we have achieved an acceptable result in two visits of 40 minutes each.
The above procedure was performed by Dr Sarkis Nalbandian. Education and Experience are everything. Designer Smiles® is a one stop shop for most implant, surgical and reconstructive (prosthodontic) oral rehabilitation solutions.
