Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but there’s no doubt that most people find a healthy-looking smile a key element of a youthful and attractive appearance.

For years Linda longed for ‘a beautiful smile like in the magazines’ but thought it would take years with braces and numerous painful dental visits to fix her teeth. ‘At my age, the thought of braces was not appealing, nor was the thought of having to cut down my teeth,’ says Linda. ‘I travel a lot and my time is very limited so several visits to the dentist was not an option.’

Linda flew to Sydney from Hong Kong to meet cosmetic dentist Dr Sarkis Nalbandian, where she had a ‘One Visit Smile Lift’. ‘In just one visit we were able to completely transform her face and improve her overall facial appearance,’ says Dr Nalbandian. ‘Teeth play a vital role in holding facial bones in place and cosmetic dentistry procedures can help reverse the ageing process. They can also avoid the need for further cosmetic procedures.’

And while Linda admits she was sceptical at first she was ‘totally amazed and delighted’ with the results. ‘I used to be very self-conscious when I smiled,’ she says. ‘When you have ugly teeth, you really notice other people’s teeth and it seems that these days more and more people have perfect-looking teeth.’

Prior to any cosmetic dental procedure, the patient’s overall facial structure is carefully analysed. This means taking into account the symmetry of the individual’s facial features, including the positioning of the eyes, nose, lips and chin, as well as their position in relation to each other.‘A dentist also needs to be an artist,’ explains Dr Nalbandian. ‘An artist thinks about harmony and sym-metry, while a dentist thinks like an engineer. To get the best results, a dentist needs to combine the two ways of thinking.’ bella

Dr Nalbandian completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honours in 1983 and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) in 2000 at the University of Sydney. He also completed a Masters (Prosthodontics) with Distinction in 2005 at the King’s College, University of London.
